It has been quite a while since the Iowa State Fair and I am sure most of the brewers around Iowa and the Midwest are pumped up about this event. As you can see, all of The Freak Brother's beers are ready to go and we are looking forward to it. I look forward to seeing you all this Saturday too.
The Freak Brothers have 7 beers in the game. We have made some adjustments to our operation over the winter but, I think we will do well. Good luck to the rest of you too!
IBU Open Entries
1. Brown Porter (2008 Iowa State Fair "Best of Show" Beer)
2. Oatmeal Stout (Freaks pick to score the highest of our entries)
3. German Pilsner (Freaks 2nd pick to score the highest of all our entries)
4. Hefe Weizen (Bottle conditioned, Should do well)

The only thing I worry about is the beers that we used the Beer Gun on. I don't know why this bothers me but, I have opened some of them and they just don't seem to have the head retention that I would like to see. May not be a big deal. We shall see.
Freak On!
No worries... I think they'll be just fine. The beer gun works just fine. Late
I agree, the beer gun works just fine, I like to carbonate a couple of pounds over the recomended for the style and leave it in the keg for 7-10 days before bottling, won the gold with my eisbock and alt at last years IBU open with this technique.
As a follow competitor in the IBU Open, I would like to say "Game on!"
All kidding aside, I'm glad we have such a strong long community of homebrewing. It is fun to me to share our craft and ultimately improve the results.
And btw, watch out for my pale ale.
How can we look out for your pale ale when you blog anonymously? Who are yu?
If history counts for anything, best of show will be a high gravity beer or a hop bomb. That is unfortunate but, it does not seem to matter how close to BJCP style you are in the final round. The judges seem to go on personal preference. That is not how it should be but, that is how it is. 4 out of the 7 beers we have in the fight are light and / or low gravity. They are good to excellent. I do not expect any of the 4 to win in the final round. I hope I am wrong but, I won't be. Sorry Pale Ales.
Last year a Pilsner won Best in Show
Really! Well, that makes me feel better. We were not in the show last year. I hope it is still guided by the BJCP rules. I know that Andy C. is always a good and fair judge. I've known him since we were kids. He tends to do the Best of Show judging because he is a master judge. That will be good if he does it. Doesn't matter I guess. I just want to see lots of gold. The rest will take care of its self.
I saw you asked for suggestions for your 3/28 brew. How about something with Wyeasts special release yeasts which are due only to run through March. They have an old ale blend and an Imperial blend, both are purported to do well in dark worts and attenuate well past 9%. It would make a rare and unique beer given the fact that the yeast will be gone soon.
Old Ale Blend Wyeast #Y9097, Imperial Blend Y9093
Congrats on your Cream Ale at the IBU Open Scott. You were right. A light beer can win B.O.S. You did well. You gotta get over here and brew with us. We would like to join you too.

Any idea if the results are posted anywhere? How do you know a cream ale won?
Thanks guys, I can't wait to see your set up, it looks very cool. I've got a wedding this Sat. but if your brewing the 28th I'd love to stop by, what time do you usually get started? I'll keep an eye out for information here on your cool web site. My cell number is 822 3135.
Anonymous - The results were announced at the competition. Should be posted on the IBU web site soon. That is, if they keep it updated.
Chuck - We usually start around 11 am. Keep an eye on our schedule. We do keep it up to date. He He!!!
I posted the results here:

I did not get the Best in Show or IBU Challenge winners
Thanks Matt! We didn't do as well at the Open but, we did OK. We know exactly what went wrong though. You can't follow the BJCP guidelines. You gotta go way over on OG and increase the IBU's to match.
Do they ever figure out the Best of Show or IBU Open...they are pretty relaxed on posting results? or did they not judge the finals yet? Posting results is all about a good competition.
Yes, all of the results are in. They were on the link that Mike put up. Chuck Scott won the B.O.S.
Still don't see an IBU challenge winner.
