The Freakin' stirplate is complete...

The other day Freak and I came to the conclusion that we needed to get back to using liquid yeast and repitching for our upcoming batches. (We have been using dry yeast because it is cheaper than using 3 or 4 packs of liquid yeast and we have not taken the time to do starters over the last several months.) We decided that to get the most out of our starters we needed a stir plate. If you've never seen one they are pretty freakin' cool and they are also a good way to greatly increase cell counts for yeast starters. I started looking around online and found lot's of info on building one for around $30.oo. Here are some pics and a quick video clip of what I built. Let me know what you think. "E"

Did you ask Mark to order in a stir bar or are you going to order one on line?

Hopshead, just do a search for build your own stir plate that's how I found what I needed. The parts are a 120mm comp fan, a 25 ohm rheostat, 12V switch an old DC plug from a phone or similar 6 to 12V, rare earth magnets or hard drive magnets and a stir bar. Give it a try it was pretty easy to make.

Every time I look at this thing I think about how far we have come in the last 17 years and all of the things we have made and done. I just can't fathom how much we have learned about the process of brewing. Then I wonder why the fuck are we not doing this for a living? Liberalism is holding us back! That's it! Government regulation keeps us from selling our wares at the local farmers market. I can sell grain. I can sell yeast. I can sell water. I can sell hops. All at a farmers market. You only have to purchase a food permit. Even at that, no one ever checks it. Mix them together and you have to sell your soul to the ATF. It don't make sense. All the BBQ permits I have bought and only one time did anyone come around to check.
